A tense and fiery confrontation took place yesterday between political activist Tommy Robinson and an ITV News reporter during a local demonstration.

The interaction, captured on video, quickly went viral, underscoring the deep ideological divides and hostility between independent activists and the mainstream media over the coverage of immigration and community safety.

The exchange began when the ITV reporter approached Robinson, questioning him about his criminal record in the context of community safety. “Mr. Robinson, you have multiple convictions yourself, do you apologize for your criminality?” the reporter asked, attempting to steer the interview toward Robinson’s past .

Robinson immediately pushed back, arguing that the focus of the interview was misplaced. He accused the reporter of attempting to smear him rather than addressing the core issue of the protest: the concerns of local women regarding a nearby asylum center. Robinson argued that while his background is public, the local community lacks information about the individuals housed in the center.

“You don’t know who those 800 people are, you don’t know how they think, you don’t know where they’ve come from… which is why the women are scared,” Robinson stated .

The confrontation escalated as Robinson accused the reporter and ITV of failing to accurately represent the local demographic of the protest, which he described as consisting of local mothers and grandmothers, and instead broadly labeling demonstrators as “far-right” .

The ITV reporter defended his network’s coverage and challenged Robinson’s assertions regarding the demographics and beliefs of the asylum seekers. When Robinson claimed that “99% of Afghanis… want Sharia law,” citing Pew Research , the reporter countered by asking, “Do you think all of the Afghan interpreters who worked with the British military wanted Sharia law?” . The reporter also challenged Robinson’s focus on the asylum center, asking, “Why choose to focus on 600 people in Wethersfield Asylum Center rather than the thousands of people every day of sexual abuse [nationwide]?” .

Robinson concluded the exchange by accusing the reporter and the mainstream media of failing their journalistic duties, claiming that the rise of citizen journalism is a direct result of networks like ITV ignoring the legitimate fears of local communities and instead opting to label them with derogatory political terms .

The confrontation highlights the ongoing friction between established media organizations and independent commentators, particularly regarding the framing of local protests surrounding immigration and asylum centers in the UK.
