Illegal immigration inquiry petition passes 60k signatures
A petition calling for an investigation into illegal migration has gained more than 60,000 signatures amid controversial plans for the Bicester MOD site.
Thousands of people have put their name to the petition which was first published on July 15 and demands a national inquiry.
It comes alongside a separate petition against plans for asylum seekers to be housed at Bicester Ministry of Defence site which has gained nearly 20,000 signatures.
The government is now required to respond to both petitions due to them passing the 10,000-mark.
The creator of the appeal which is calling for an inquiry said: “We call on the government to launch a full-scale public inquiry into illegal migration in the UK.
“The inquiry should investigate the effectiveness of UK border control, the financial cost on taxpayers, and the deportation system.”
The petition quickly gained traction following reports of large dinghies being seen crossing the Channel.
Illegal migration remains a contentious issue in the UK, with thousands of people entering the country each year.
If the petition exceeds 100,000 signatures, it could be debated in Westminster Hall.
